How to avoid static cling when wearing Silk Apparel

Static cling is caused by friction between different materials in a dry environment, and it is sometimes common when wearing silk. But don't worry, there are simple ways to prevent and reverse static cling!

First, it's important to understand that static cling occurs when there is a buildup of static electricity. This can be caused by friction between two differing materials, such as silk and other fabrics, in a dry environment. It's more likely to occur in drier regions, during the winter months when there is less moisture in the air.

1.  Drying your garments. Try hanging your dress to dry in a spot where it doesn't touch anything else. This will prevent friction and reduce the buildup of static electricity.

2. Humidity.  You can also spritz some water inside your dress to add moisture and defeat static cling. If you live or work in a dry environment, invest in a spray bottle with a "fine spray" setting and make a habit of lightly misting your dress before dashing out the door. Dry air can exacerbate static cling. To combat this, consider using a humidifier in your home, especially during the winter months when the air tends to be drier. Increasing the moisture in the air will help to reduce static electricity and prevent static cling.

3.  Moisturise.  Another way to prevent static cling is to apply moisturiser to your legs or any other part of your body that experiences static cling. This will add moisture to your skin and reduce the buildup of static electricity. Just be sure to allow the moisturiser to completely soak in before putting on your dress.

4. Use an anti-static spray: Anti-static sprays are specifically designed to eliminate static cling. Simply spray a small amount onto your silk garment before wearing it. These sprays work by neutralising the electrical charges that cause static cling, leaving your silk apparel smooth and cling-free.

5. Avoid synthetic fabrics: When pairing your silk apparel with other clothing items, try to avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester or acrylic. These materials are more likely to generate static electricity, leading to static cling. Instead, opt for natural fabrics like cotton or linen, which are less prone to static cling.  The type of undergarments you wear can greatly affect static cling. Opt for undergarments made of natural fibres like cotton or bamboo

6. Wire hanger method.If you're already experiencing static cling, don't worry! There are simple ways to reverse it. You can use the wire hanger trick to neutralise the charged ions that cause static cling. Simply grab a regular wire hanger and hold the straps of your dress while you gently glide the wire hanger against the fabric. You may hear a soft crackling noise as you do this, and that means it's working!

7.  Vinegar. Finally, if all else fails, consider a distilled white vinegar rinse while hand washing your dress. Vinegar is a great non-toxic alternative to synthetic fabric softeners and static sprays. In addition to removing any soap residue, the white vinegar acts as an all-natural conditioner that restores moisture to the silk fibres. It works as both a fabric softener and static-cling-reducer without any harsh chemicals!
